Colorless transparent liquid, relative density is about 1.37, 20% aqueous solution is 1.3284, strong acid.
Can not exist in pure state, only in aqueous solution. Fluoroboric acid is stable in concentrated solution and decomposes when heated to 130°C. Miscible with water or alcohol. Slowly decomposes in aqueous solution and gradually loses stability when in contact with glass surfaces. It is highly corrosive and can corrode most metals and organic tissues, but it does not corrode glass at room temperature. It can react with metal elements, metal fluorides, oxides, hydroxides or carbonates to form corresponding fluoroborates. Heating decomposition releases toxic fluoride gas.
